​As an instructor, Ms. Detwiler seeks to encourage creativity and confidence in students’ writing while helping them develop effective techniques for communicating through the written word. She hopes to inspire students to believe big dreams are possible if you work hard and have a true passion for your goal. 
Courses ​Overview
​​All courses, regardless of level, will focus on creative writing skills and topics that can be used to enhance all modes of writing. Our focus in these classes will be to learn techniques that enhance storytelling techniques, a writer’s style, and their ability to connect with their audience. By infusing writing with carefully executed creative strategies, writers can more readily connect with their readers in all formats. Grammatical issues will be tackled on an as-needed basis in each course, and students will receive individualized feedback. Students will also have the opportunity to share their work throughout the course.

English Writing Beginner's Camp
​“Using Vivid Description to Enhance the Emotional Appeal of Your Writing”
Grade: Rising 4 - 5 Grade
Date: week 4 and week 5 (7/12 - 7/16 and 7/19 - 7/23)
Time: 9:30 am - 11:45 am
​In this course, students will learn how to write vivid, imagery-infused pieces in order to strengthen the emotional appeal of their work. Students will explore how to effectively incorporate imagery into various types of writing in order to communicate their ideas more clearly. Students will learn how to use figurative language to enhance their writing. We will also cover idea generation and how to plot out a short story.  Finally, the course will incorporate the study of poetic skills in order to encourage vivid, precise descriptions that enhance the emotional appeal with the audience. Students will conclude the class by writing an “I am From” poem that will require the use of the various techniques and skills learned in the course.

English Writing Intermediate Camp
“Using Precise Language and Description to Enhance Expression”
Grade: Rising 6 - 7 Grade
Date: week 4 and week 5 (7/12 - 7/16 and 7/19 - 7/23)
Time: 1:30 pm - 3:45 pm
​In this course, students will work on precision of language and description so the ideas they communicate are interpreted as intended. Students will learn about the principle of show versus tell and explore the impact of this technique in various forms. Students will explore descriptive paragraphs in this class in order to finetune craft. Vocabulary usage, active voice, figurative language, and power verbs will be essential topics covered in order to help students enhance their writing. Students will also learn how the 100-word story format can encourage them to be precise and enhance the flow of their work. We will utilize creative nonfiction, poetry, and short stories to practice the skills we learn. The class will culminate with silent scene writing, which is a strategy that encourages vivid, clear description and language in order to convey an idea.

English Writing Advanced Camp
​“Developing a Distinctive Writing Voice and Style to Improve Connection”
Grade: Rising 8 - 9 Grade
Date: week 6 and week 7 (7/26 - 7/30 and 8/2 - 8/6)
Time: 9:30 am - 11:45 am​
 This class will focus on helping students to develop a distinctive writing voice and style in order to stand out in a crowd. Understanding who you are as a writer and what sets you apart is an essential skill in all types of writing, including college entrance essays. In this course, students will learn about the fifteen elements of style and how they can affect their writing choices. We will delve deeply into how to infuse your writing with creativity by exploring analogy writing, figurative language, diction, syntax, synectics, and idea generation. We will explore writing from various perspectives in order to enhance students’ abilities to think outside the box. Students will also explore an advanced grammar concept that helps them vary their syntax. After exploring these strategies through poetry, descriptive paragraphs, and short stories, students will end the class with a creative nonfiction piece about their favorite place to demonstrate their understanding of the skills learned.

​Multiple Discounts
1. ​Group buying discount: $50 off for each student in the group if each student in the group enrolled in our summer camp and the group has one old student and one or more new students. (An old student is defined as a student who enrolled in any of Koo Chinese Academy class or summer camp before. A new student is defined as a student who has never enrolled in any Koo Chinese Academy's class or summer camp before.  students in the group can not be siblings. )
2. Early Bird Discount: 5% off on all paid tuition if enrolled and paid by April 18th. 
3. Multi-week Discount: 5% off if enrolled for 5 weeks or more of Koo Chinese Academy camp and paid in full by May 16th. 

​4. Sibling discount: 5% to all kids from the same family other than the first one on a lessor tuition. ​
