English Writing Beginner's Camp
Grade: Rising 4 - 5 Grade
Date:
Session I - week 2 and week 3 (7/5 - 7/8 and 7/11 - 7/15)
Session II - week 4 and week 5 (7/18 - 22 and 7/25 - 7/29)
Time： 1 pm - 5:30 pm, including 2-hour class each day
Class Size: 10 students
This course will focus on nonfiction writing with an emphasis on skills aligned with grade-level Common Core Standards. Students will write opinion pieces and informative essays through a process of planning, drafting, workshopping, conferencing, revising, and editing. Using exemplary mentor texts, students will study the author's craft choices and practice incorporating them into their own writing. They will also learn how to state clear thesis statements, substantiate claims, and organize their writing to flow smoothly from one idea to the next. By the end of the course, students should leave with actionable steps they can use to improve their writing.
